‘Upstart’ was a project directed by Warren Taylor and Alessandro Mason (GISTO). It was conducted during Melbourne Design Week 2024, and was an opportunity for us to think about what kind of designers are given space at public events, as well as how younger and newer designers might make spaces for themselves. It was also an opportunity for me personally to collaborate with a team of young designers, under the guidance of some who were more experienced.

The main outcome of this project was a series of public space activations hosted on a custom-built, travelling platform stage for young designers and creatives to use as a vessel to talk about their work.

Alongside these activations, we made readers that would be handed out to any passers-by who were curious about what we were doing. They contained texts that were thematically related to the project. I assisted Warren Taylor in coordinating the creation of this reader, sourcing material to include inside its pages, formatting the content into spreads, and putting together the final document.
